Field trials

Starting from 3 September 2007, GIROADS saw the closure of its critical phase with the live demonstration of its technical architecture on high potential road applications ranging from pay-per-use insurance to electronic fee collection.

These trials constitute a tangible illustration of the “one On Board Unit – multiple applications” principle recommended by GIROADS to ensure the sustained development of satellite navigation applications. Their aims was also to confirm the added value offered by guaranteed position integrity as a prerequisite for the emergence of commercially viable services in the road sector.

The following trials were scheduled in September, October and November 2007:

  • Electronic Fee Collection & Road Charging

Where ? Odivelas Toll Plaza, BRISA motorway network

The aim of this test is to demonstrate the technological and business model feasibility of a specific application in two different environments: extra-urban and urban. The management of the pricing of the use of the road infrastructure: a toll for highways or a tax in an urban environment, helping to control the access to a particular urban area, to detect the time that a vehicle is in a zone, etc. Special emphasis in this trial has been put in the legal aspect to clarify and stress the importance of the integrity added value

  • Livestock tracking

Where ? Livestock transport journey, Spain

The Livestock Tracking & Tracing Demonstration is intended to demonstrate the suitability of EGNOS (and future Galileo) to be used as satellite navigation system in the vehicles transporting livestock as well as to demonstrate the added value of EGNOS (and future Galileo) with respect to other navigation systems in this context.

  • Urban Fleet Monitoring

Where ? ATAC bus route, City of Rome
